There’s something unbearably sad about going to a museum and seeing an object that has lost its story. We might know where it was found, perhaps a (highly) educated guess as to the century it was made, and a suggestion that it might have been of some cultural importance. But the feeling someone was trying to express with that object has been lost to time.
These types of objects all had stories. Stories well known at a particular time, at a particular place, with a particular people. Stories told again and again and again. Stories loved enough to be made into carvings, statues, and drawings.
We can't ever give these objects their stories back. So we thought we’d give them some new ones.
Join our cast of performers, storytellers, and musicians as they imagine new myths for these myth-less objects.
Tours start from Ashmolean museum welcome desk at 5.30pm and 6.45pm. Ages 14+. Free - just come along.
